Architect Germany attacked in Bangladesh

An award-winning German architect was attacked by a number of opposition activists in Bangladesh in a number of protests over the weekend that left two people dead and dozens injured, according to the German embassy in Dhaka on Monday.

Anna Heringer (35), who won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2007, returned to the capital on Sunday when the car he was driving was stopped by around 15 men who smashed all the windows of vehicles and dragged him out.

"Feeling for his life, Heringer jumped out of the car and managed to escape," the embassy said in a statement, adding that his car was burned.

The driver was beaten and suffered severe head injuries in the event of an embassy described as "horrific attack."

"Ambassador (Albrecht) Conze sent a letter of protest to the chief Khaleda (main opposition) Khaled Zia's BNP and reported the incident to the foreign ministry," the embassy said.

No further comment from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) or from the police.
