Messi Wants Degree, Not Just Solving Record
Lionel Messi insists that a record-breaking 86 goals during 2012 will not mean anything if Barcelona lost La Liga titles and the Champions League.
Argentina star was carving his name in the football history books with record-breaking German legend, Gerd Mueller, made in 1972 with 85 goals in a calendar year.
But the 25-year-old was more than happy to highlight the win domestic and European scoring record which he achieved.
"I've often said, a remarkable thing I could break the record, but a victory for the team and the points difference is paramount," said Messi when Barcelona to maintain their six-point advantage from Atletico Madrid and 11 points ahead of Real Madrid.
"My goal is to win a title with the team, Spanish League, Spanish Cup or the Champions League is more important than personal record."
It did not take long for Messi to break Mueller record by scoring two goals for Barca against Real Betis.
"My goal at the start of the season is to win the league," added Messi, who is also likely to win the Ballon d'Or a record four times in a row.
To achieve the award, he will face competition from his team-mates Iniesta and Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo.
"If Iniesta wins, he deserves it after all he has done, for the game that he gave."
Barca coach Tito Vilanova, expect more goals would come from Messi, who are now collecting 74 goals in all competitions for Barcelona this year and 12 goals for Argentina, after playing in 66 games total.
His teammates wrote on Twitter to congratulate him.
"Good game. Congratulations to Leo for having suss out a record," wrote goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
Iniesta also not miss congratulate him, "Congratulations Leo, you're incredible."
