WTO approves membership of Tajikistan

Geneva- The World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday, Tajikistan agree to 11-year struggle to join the UN's global trade body, paving the way for the Central Asian countries to become members of the 159.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmonov praised the move at a ceremony in Geneva, described it as "a milestone in the history of Tajikistan."


The country will become an official member 30 days after ratification of the deal, something had to be done on June 7, 2013, the WTO said.

The decision to allow Tajikistan became the second country in Central Asia to join the UN trade body after Kyrgyzstan, estimated after the WTO working group approved the entry requirements in October.

As part of its accession agreement, Tajikistan agree to make a series of commitments to further open trade regime and accelerate integration in the world economy.

State, which has been seeking WTO membership since 2001, have agreed to apply the average import tariffs to a maximum of 8.0 percent, with no additional duties or fees.

Tajikistan also promised to eliminate practices that restrict the right to import goods, and implement WTO commitments evenly across the country, including in special economic zones and border areas.

Rahmonov said the proposal to join the WTO is "the right step forward for Tajikistan since transformed into a market economy," stressed the membership will help boost "economic growth and prosperity."


WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy also praised the deal, suggests that Tajikistan marks "a path to the world economy."
