Former Leader Detained Myanmar Monks

A Myanmar monk who led protests in 2007 has been arrested, an official said on Tuesday, in the latest legal action since the release of a long sentence in prison along with hundreds of other political prisoners this year.


33-year-old monk, known as Gambira, was arrested on Saturday night by the mother Daw Yay, alarming mental health of his son.


A government official, who asked not to be named, confirmed that Gambira Isein been sent to prison in Yangon and indicted on charges of "breaking into a monastery." He did not give further details.


Gambira is one of hundreds of political prisoners freed by the regime in January. He is serving 68 years in prison for oerannya the "Saffron Revolution" led by Buddhist monks, which was crushed by the military.


Yay Daw, who said that her son had stopped being a monk since his release from prison, told AFP that Gambira suffered "serious."


"We are worried because his health is not good," he said, adding that the family had heard that he will be tried on December 14.


Gambira, who is only known by one name, was arrested in February and March as well as allegedly illegally entered and sat in the monasteries that had been closed after the protests of 2007.


The process of interrogation by the authorities drew sharp criticism from the United States and international rights activists.
