Libya: Benghazi Security Chief Killed

Benghazi (AFP / Reuters) - The head of security in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, was killed on Tuesday night, said a security official told AFP.

Someone unknown opened fire from a car in al-Dersi Fraj in front of his house. He was shot by three bullets and died shortly after being taken to the medical center of Benghazi, said the officer, who asked not to be named.

Dersi appointed immediately after an attack on the U.S. consulate on 11 September that claimed the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, and three other Americans.

He held leading positions under the regime of Moamer Kadhafi, including as head of the anti-drug agency, before joining the rebellion against former dictator when started in February 2011.

A number of recent murders in eastern Libya, a large part of the police or military officials who served under Gaddafi, has been linked to a number of radical Islamists.
