Thousands of Tibetan protesters in New York Protest Chinese Government
Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the United Nations (UN) in New York, United States today. They called for the end of the Chinese leadership in Tibet.
Solidarity, named "Solidarity Rally for Tibet" was followed by thousands of demonstrators, mostly Tibetans. They walk away from the West Side of Manhattan into Dag Hammarskjold Plaza across from the United Nations headquarters.
The demonstrators chanted slogans: "We want justice, build the UN!" Some protesters carried banners appear reading: "UN: Tibetans need you!"
As reported by Reuters on Tuesday (12/11/2012), other demonstrators carrying pictures and names of Tibetans who have committed self-immolation acts as a form of protest against the Chinese government.
New York Police Department at the demo site can not mention the exact number of protesters. However, a police official confirmed that the amount of thousands of people.
Protesters carry pictures of the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. In its action, the protesters were handing out leaflets that said that China "has done repression and brutality in Tibet with increasing intensity since 2008." In the leaflet also stated that Beijing had "lying and distorting the facts."
At least 92 Tibetan self-immolation has been waging since 2009 to protest the Chinese leadership. Among that number, as many as 75 people have died after burning himself. The number of cases of self-immolation has soared this year, with 28 cases occurring during November alone.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China last week emphasized that the Tibet issue had nothing to do with human rights, ethnic or religious. He also repeated the official stance of the Chinese government that the Tibetan people have been enjoying a lot of progress under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party. The Dalai Lama was blamed as the instigator of the actions of self-immolation.
